Belem & The Mekanics

A meeting between Didier Laloy and composer Walter Hus, co-founder of the avant-garde group Maximalist and spiritual father of the Decap organ, a unique high-tech version of the dance organ from the 1960s, resulted in this project of creative madness, where Laloy immersing his warm and poetic sound in the mechanical precision of Walter's organ.

This computer-controlled orchestral ensemble generates acoustic and organic sounds and consists of 15 elements: organ pipes, accordions and percussion instruments. The valves of the organ, the keys of the chromatic accordion, every hammer and every percussion stick respond to a millisecond. Even the pressure of the wind in the individual organ tubes can be controlled down to the smallest detail.

The duo Belem, consisting of Didier Laloy and Kathy Adams, have known each other for years and form the atypical duo with diatonic accordion and cello. Their pieces of music are short stories in which crazy elegant rhythms intersect. Rotterdam Unlimited brings this unusual project out of the obsession for new music, born from the bringing together of cultures and life styles.

This concert is a co-production of De Doelen and Rotterdam Unlimited.
